Frequently Asked Questions

Batting

Is your batting made is the USA?

  • Yes!

What batting should I use for my quilt?

  • Please consult our Batting University guide to determine which type of batting will work best in your quilt.

What is needle punched batting?

  • With needle punched batting, the fibers have been carded then put through a machine that punches the fibers down with thousands of needles, securing them in place for wonderful stability and durability.

What is thermal bonding?

  • Our Dream Wool and Dream Puff battings are thermally bonded. This means the fibers are blended with a low melt poly fiber that is used as the bonding agent. The fibers are carded and sent through an oven where the low melt poly fibers melt and bond the main fibers securely in place, which prevents bearding, shifting, and shrinking.

Is there a right or wrong side to needle punched batting?

  • Officially there is no right or wrong side. However, most quilters prefer the batting to be quilted the same direction as the batting was needle punched, so the flat or slightly dimpled side would be up, and the fuzzier side would be down.

What is scrim?

  • Scrim is a very thin polypropylene sheeting that is needle punched into the batting, which provides extra stability to a batting. Dream Blend is the only batting we carry that has a scrim, which provides extra support for tugging/pulling the batting when used on a longarm machine. Because of the scrim, Dream Blend will not stretch or leave handprint marks when pulled.

Do you use resins or glues in your batting?

  • None of Quilters Dream Batting products contain resins or glues.

Can I use Quilters Dream Batting in the microwave?

  • Because of legal reasons, we cannot recommend the use of batting in the microwave. Some of our customers do use Quilters Dream Cotton, which is 100% cotton, for potato bags, but as with all battings, great care and diligence should be used if you decide to use it.

Do I need to prewash the batting?

  • No, we do not recommend prewashing Quilters Dream Batting. When batting becomes wet, it becomes heavy and can stretch/pull or even come apart. The quilting gives the batting the support needed for years of washing without bunching or shifting. We use very high quality clean fibers, so you should not have to pre-wash or pre-shrink. Please consult our Unique Features User Guide to determine approximate shrinkage that can be expecting with each type of batting.

How far apart can I quilt your batting?

How do I use the Quilters Dream Fusible batting?

  • Dream Fusion is a one sided fusible batting that contains fusible webbing that can be fused to your fabric without losing softness or drapeability. To use, layer the back/wrong side of your fabric onto the fusible side of Dream Fusion. Press with an iron to fuse them together. For extra fusion, use a higher heat setting.

Which Quilters Dream Batting do you recommend for a design wall?

  • Quilters Dream Blend works very well for a design wall – fabric will cling to the curly cotton fibers and the scrim will add stability so the batting will hang well. Dream Cotton in the Select or Deluxe loft is also an excellent choice.

Are you able to cut a custom size batting?

  • Yes, we can customize batting sizes for our wholesale customers. Please contact us for charges.

Can I layer batting? Do I need to use the fiber content when layering?

  • Yes, layering batting – either with the same fiber content or different – can ramp up your quilting game!
  • There is no wrong or right way for layering battings.
  • Are you making a show quilt? Combine Quilters Dream Wool and Quilters Dream Poly Select. The Poly Select batting creates a nice stabilizing layer while that will add weight to your quilt, so it hangs flat. As an added bonus, polyester fiber does not crease, so it is ideal for travel.
